Q.
How do you feel about children taking both their mother’s and father’s last names?
A.
I think this is wonderful! In South Korea, it is customary for children to take their father’s last name and not their mother’s. I think it is nice to be able to include both parents’ last names. However, I do not think this is allowed in South Korea, and children must only take their father’s name. I’ve never agreed with the fact that it is only the father’s last name that a child takes after. It is the mother who carries the baby for over nine months in her body, and it is the mother who goes through extreme pain to bring the child into this world. If you think about it, without women, children would not be born. I’ve always thought that it was very unfair. I think Spain is a very progressive country in this area, for them to include both parents’ last names.
