The Songthaew is another popular form of public transport in Thailand. Songthaew in Thai means “two rows.” As the name suggests, Songthaews are converted pick-up trucks with two rows of seating in the back for passengers. In some tourist areas, such as Pattaya, a songthaew is sometimes called as a “baht bus.” To hail a songthaew, wave your arm with your palm facing down until one approaches.

'쏭태우'는 태국의 또 다른 인기있는 대중 교통 수단이다. 태국어로 Songthaew는 "두 줄"이라는 뜻이다. 이름이 암시하는 것처럼, 쏭태우는 승객들을 위해 뒤쪽에 두 줄의 좌석으로 개조 된 픽업 트럭이다. 파타야와 같은 일부 관광지역에서는 쏭태우를 "바트 버스"라고 부르기도 한다. 쏭태우를 부르려면 가까이 올 때까지 손바닥을 아래로 향하도록 팔을 흔든다.

Q. What do you think of the songthaew?

A. Songthaews are not air-conditioned and because it’s open, passengers have to inhale all the smoke and dust from the road. The price is not metered, but passengers have to negotiate the price with the driver before they get on. Despite these downsides, I like songthaews and I think they are worth riding when we visit Thailand. The drivers take the passengers through the streets of Thailand and let the passengers feel the heat of the city. Songthaews are like the streetcars or trams of Toronto and the cable cars of San Francisco.
