Q.
What are some customary greetings that you know from other cultures?
A.
I know of an unusual greeting from New Zealand. The Maori people are indigenous people of New Zealand. They have a traditional greeting called the hongi. The Maori people reserve this greeting for visitors and not with each other. The hongi is done by closing the eyes and gently touching the foreheads and rubbing the noses together. The belief is that this greeting will breathe the life of Maori into the visitors. It’s a beautiful interaction but it can sometimes look a little silly and funny.
