Return A Wai

The wai is Thailand's famous greeting. It is done by putting both hands together in a prayer-like gesture and is accompanied by a bow of the head. The wai greeting is usually paired with the Thai word ‘sawasee’ which means hello. This gesture is also used to say goodbye, to apologize, and when saying thank you. Thai people love it when visitors use this gesture! Not returning a wai is considered extremely impolite. Only the king and monks do not have to return wais. Wais are not done while holding something in the hands. In that case, a slight bow will be enough.
