  • To get the attention of the server or any person of service in a restaurant in Australia, do not wave or call to get their attention. Doing so is considered very rude. The correct way to get the attention of a server is to keep an eye out for them until they make eye contact with you, then gently nod or raise your hand slightly to get their attention. Another way is to politely say “excuse me” when a server passes by your table.

Q & A
Vocabulary
Q. How do you normally get the attention of a server in a restaurant?
A. In America, I normally get the attention of a waiter the same way as Australians. We do not wave at them or call for them but we look to make eye contact with them to get their attention. When I moved to Singapore for work, it was different. People in Singapore wave at servers to get their attention for taking their orders and also to get the bill to make payment. It took me a while to get used to this because it was the opposite of what we do in the States.
