In Churchill, Canada, polar bears outnumber residents. Polar bears are three meters tall and weigh about 635kg. They are also curious, aggressive, and one of the world’s most powerful predators. It is dangerous to walk the streets of Churchill at night during bear season. People need shelter quickly if they come across any polar bears. For this reason, residents of Churchill leave their cars unlocked for anyone who might run into polar bears. Churchill has a population of only around 900 people, so if a car is stolen, everyone knows who did it.

Would it be safe to leave your car unlocked in your home city and why?

- In downtown San Francisco, it is never safe for anyone to leave their cars unlocked. If they do so, their car might be stolen within five minutes by gangs and groups specifically out to steal cars in downtown San Francisco. However, in my hometown Napa, about one hour from San Francisco, all the neighbors know each other. It is safe to leave our cars unlocked. From time to time I would forget to lock my car and it was still there in the morning. I think it’s because all our neighbors knew each other and they can spot anyone suspicious and alert the police right away.
