Sunday Roast

The Sunday roast became popular during the reign of King Henry VII in 1485. It spread from the Sunday family dinner table to pubs and other days of the week. On Sundays throughout the U.K., restaurants and pubs are packed full for the roast dinner. For many, cooking and serving Sunday lunch at home is the heart of British food and cooking. It is a time for family and friends to gather together to share delicious food.

Are there any special dishes in your country that are eaten on special days?

- South Koreans have tteokguk, or rice cake soup, on Lunar New Year’s Day. In the past, rice cake was not a common food. People only had hard-to-come-by or expensive food on special occasions, such as birthdays and holidays. The main ingredient of tteokguk is white rice, which has the meaning of purity. It symbolizes a fresh start for the new year. The round rice cakes look like the old Korean coin and symbolizes prosperity. Therefore, having one bowl of tteokguk in the new year represents good luck and the addition of one more year to a person’s age.
