The Only Corn Palace in the world

The only one of its kind in the world, a palace made entirely out of corn can be found in Mitchell, South Dakota. It first started in 1892, where it was used as a gathering place for a fall festival to celebrate the harvest season. Today, in addition to the annual Corn Palace Festival held in late August, it is also used for exhibitions, meetings, banquets, graduation, and basketball tournaments. The Corn Palace is redecorated every year with naturally colored corn, grains, and native grasses. Twelve shades of corn are used to decorate the palace. The decorating process starts in May and is only completed by the first of October. The Corn Palace receives over 500,000 tourists each year.
