Ice hockey

Ice hockey originated in Canada. In 1875, the first recorded indoor ice hockey game took place at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. The sport made its way to America and in 1894, the first hockey ice rink was built in Maryland, USA. Ice hockey is the most popular in states with cold winter climates, such as the northeast and upper Midwest states of America. In other sports, fighting can result in serious consequences. In ice hockey, however, fighting is very much a part of the sport. It is not uncommon to see players from opposing teams fight violently to the cheers of the spectators. There is a code of honor, however, in hockey fights. For example, players are allowed to throw punches at each other but spitting can get a player thrown out of the game.
