Great Slave Lake is the fifth largest lake in North America and the tenth largest lake in the world. It is covered by ice for eight months of the year. Great Slave Lake is famous for being the best location in the world to see the famous aurora, or northern lights. Being close to the North Pole, Great Slave Lake has clear, dark skies and a flat landscape. These are the best conditions to see the northern lights. The best time to visit for northern lights is mid-November to April.

Q. If you had a chance, would you visit the Great Slave Lake to see the northern lights?

A. Yes, I most definitely would! I have always wanted to go and see the northern lights. I think it is one of the most beautiful things in our natural world. The first time I heard about the northern lights and saw images of it, I didn’t believe that it was real. To me, I think northern lights look like things that exist in worlds with fairies and magic that we read about in books. It almost looks like it doesn’t belong in our world but I am so glad that it does.
