  • Bannock is a simple fried Canadian bread. This delicious flat bread is a big part of indigenous culture in Canada. It dates back to the 18th century and became popular because it was filling and easy to transport in the wilderness. Bannock can be eaten plain or topped with sweet or savory toppings. Modern bannock is baked and then fried. Today, bannock can be found in many bakeries across Canada with many flavors, shapes, and sizes.

Q & A
Vocabulary
Q. What is your favorite type of bread and why?
A. Most bread in America are baked. I have never seen any American bread that is fried like the bannock. There is a Taiwanese bread in Chinatown, San Francisco that is my favorite. This Taiwanese bread is made with dough that has been allowed to rise a little. A little amount of diced green onions is added to the dough before it is rolled out into a long, thin roll and then curled into a round shape. The dough can be made sweet or savory. Once it has been shaped into the traditional round shape, it is pan-fried on both sides until they are slightly brown. This Taiwanese bread is best eaten hot and very delicious.
