Q.
It is exciting to try food abroad, but it may not always suit our taste. Do you have any negative experiences with local food abroad?
A.
I don’t normally have any trouble with local food during my travels, but I had a pretty bad experience with a local dish in Malaysia. The dish is called Stink Beans, or petai beans in Malay. It is made from the seeds of a large bean. The seeds are bright green and has the shape and size of almonds. They are normally fried with sliced onions and fresh chillies, and they are supposed to be very good for our bodies. However, the beans have such a strong and bitter flavor that it was such a shock to me the first time I ate it! To make it worse, the bitter flavor gets stronger the more you chew it, and the beans leave a very strong aftertaste in your mouth. It was the first time that I had such a bad experience with local food, and I never want to try the dish again.
