Batik is an ancient Javanese form of cloth design. Designs are created on cloth by using hot wax and dye. Dye color is applied directly to areas of the cloth for design. Hot wax is applied to block any area of the cloth from receiving dye color. This process is repeated to create elaborate and colorful designs. Cloth materials with batik designs on them are simply called batik.

바틱은 고대 자바니사 형태의 천 디자인이다. 뜨거운 왁스와 염료를 사용하여 천 위에 디자인을 그린다. 디자인을 위해 천에 직접 염료 색상을 도포한다. 뜨거운 왁스는 염료 도포를 막기 위해 바른다.
이 프로세스를 반복하여 화려하고 정교한 디자인을 만든다. 바틱 무늬가 있는 천을 간단히 바틱이라고 부른다.

Q. Do you have a preference for oriental designs, like the batik, or modern design?

A. I have a preference for modern designs. Oriental designs such as the batik is a little too ethnic for me. I think they are very creative and beautiful, but they are too representative of different groups of people. For example, batiks usually represent the Indonesian or Malay cultures. Lots of red, lanterns, or dragon designs are representative of the Chinese culture. Even though I am Chinese myself, I do not like to have these designs. For my own home, I intend to have modern designs that are classy. Depending on the mood that I want to create in each room of my house, I will use different natural colors.
