The Number Four

In many buildings in Malaysia, the fourth floor is replaced with another number. Generally, it is replaced with “3A.” This is because the Chinese believe that the number “four” is unlucky. In the Chinese language, the sound of “four” (sì) is very similar to the sound of the word “death” (sĭ). For this reason, many Chinese speaking countries will replace the number four with another number in public buildings.

말레이시아의 많은 건물에서 4층은 다른 번호로 대체된다. 일반적으로 "3A"로 대체된다. 중국인들은 숫자 "4"가 불운하다고 믿기 때문이다. 중국어로 "4"는 "죽음"이라는 단어의 소리와 매우 흡사하다.

Q. Do you have a number that holds a special meaning for you?

A. Similar to Malaysia, the number “four” is considered to be unlucky in South Korea for the same reason. The number “seven” is generally considered to be a lucky number in South Korea. Personally, if there is a lucky number for me, it would have to be the number “nine.” In 2019, I received a special promotion with good performance in my company. In 2009, I met my lifelong soulmate like destiny. In 1999, I won the Mathematics Olympiad. I wonder what good things will happen for me in 2029.
