Q.
What is the main holiday in your culture? Are there any special activities or customs associated with this holiday?
A.
One of the most important holidays in South Korea is the Lunar New Year. It is known as “Seollal” in Korean. Families and relatives gather together on this holiday. Children wish their elders (grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles) a happy new year by performing a deep traditional bow in traditional Korean clothes. After receiving a bow, the elders will bless the youngsters by saying “I hope you stay healthy this year” or “I hope you do well in school this year.” The youngsters will receive money in an envelope from their elders after the bow. During the Seollal, South Koreans enjoy a traditional dish called the tteokguk, which is made from sliced rice cake. They also have fun playing the traditional game “yutnori,” a game played with four sticks.
