Q.
The same dish may taste different in different countries. Have you ever experienced having the same dish in a different country that tasted different from what you expected?
A.
I used to have authentic Malay curry in a Malaysian restaurant near my home in America. The owners were Malays from Malaysia who migrated to America so I knew that their curry was authentic. When I came to Malaysia for a trip, I felt sure that I knew what to expect when I had curry for lunch. However, it wasn’t what I expected at all. The taste was similar but also very different. It was much more sour and the gravy was thinner than the curry I had in America. Although it was delicious, I still preferred the Malaysian curry that I had back home in America. It is very likely that the Malay owners adjusted the flavor to suit the taste of Americans and that’s why the curries tasted so different.
