Q.
What is the customary way of greeting in your culture?
A.
In the American culture, you always greet someone new with a handshake, and say “hi”, and “nice to meet you”. For close friends and family, we greet them with a hug or kisses. Hugs are common in the western states of America. In the eastern part of America, close friends and family are greeted with kisses on the cheeks. Kisses on the mouth are reserved for romantic partners only. There are some parents in the southern states of America, Texas for example, who will sometimes kiss little children on the mouth. Men will greet other men with a handshake or a hug. The best way for visitors to know whether to hug or kiss in America is just to wait and see what the native person will do. If they lean in for a hug, return the hug. If they lean in for a kiss, return the kiss. But note that you never actually kiss the person on the cheek. The custom is that you’re supposed to touch cheeks briefly and make the sound of a kiss.
